Making a chia egg is shockingly easy. I’ve heard of it before, but I never tried it until recently. A chia egg is a great vegan alternative to eggs. All you will need is chia seeds, water, and at least 5 minutes. I had looked into some vegan alternatives for eggs for my Vegan Mediterranean Spiced Chickpea Balls, and after some quick googling I was ready to try something new!
However, I was worried that when I was making the “meatballs” the chia egg would not hold the mixture together like a normal egg would, but I was not disappointed! My “meatballs” held together perfectly, and now I’m looking for more ways I can use my new found knowledge. In fact, I’ve recently pinned a recipe on Pinterest for some healthy Peanutbutter & Banana breakfast oatmeal bars, and I think swapping on the eggs for chia eggs will be a great addition to the nutritional value!
Making Your Chia Egg
Like I said all you need is chia seeds, water, and time. It’s really that easy.
• 1 Tbsp Chia seeds
• 2.5 Tbsp Water
This mixture will make one “egg.” So for example, for my “meatballs” I needed two eggs. So I doubled the ingredients and the mixture came out perfect.
After you mix the chia seeds and water to ensure all the seeds are coated, let it sit for 5 minutes. The end result should be like a gel, and it should hold it’s shape. I was able to turn the bowl upside down and it barely moved!
On the left is a photo of the mixture I made, and the right is the final result.
Hopefully this helps anyone who is either looking to become vegan, or someone like me who just loves to try new things in the kitchen! Cooking is all about experimenting, and trying different techniques.
